Counselling

Familyworks provides a counselling service for adults, young people and children. If you are looking for information on counsellors its likely that you or someone close to you needs help with something they are struggling with. The first step is for you to contact us and ask for an initial assessment. If we think we can help, we will tell you. If we think you need a different kind of help then we will discuss this with you and point you in the right direction. If the counsellor doesn't think we are best placed to help, they may suggest another organisation.

Would Counselling Help ?

Clients come with a variety of different issues including:

  • Family or Work Problems

  • Stress

  • Bereavement

  • Anxiety, Depression

  • Self Esteem Issues

  • Self-Harming Behaviour

  • Personal Issues

  • Marriage, Divorce and Relationship Issues

Some clients come to us seeking help for a particular issue. Others find counselling useful for gaining perspective on the past or for helping them to make better decisions in the future. Counselling helps you take time out from your situation and see it from a fresh perspective. Working with a counsellor gives you a chance to think about what you can do to change your situation for the better. It can also give you a chance to explore complex or difficult issues in a safe and confidential environment.

Working with Children and Adolescents

Familyworks has a strong reputation for its counselling work with children. Growing up presents a range of challenges for children and adolescents. Counselling can help children cope with normal developmental issues or specific problems like divorce or the death of a parent. Children may also be helped to deal with anxieties or phobias. When children and adolescents come to Familyworks they are the clients, even if they have been brought by other people. While we encourage them to discuss their counselling with their parents, we respect their right to choose not to. We afford them the same degree of confidentiality that we do to our adult clients.

Who refers clients to Familyworks ?

GPs and Social Services refer patients and clients to Familyworks when they consider they could benefit from counselling. But you can contact us directly if you would like to seek counselling in relation to issues which are causing you difficulty.

Fee Structure

We are a charity and do not make a profit from our service. However we need to cover our costs as we do not receive government funding. We therefore ask private clients to make a donation where they can afford to do so. An initial assessment session with a counsellor is always free of charge. For clients referred by statutory services such as GPs and Social Services, our fee structure is £200 for six one-hour sessions. Counselling with an independent practitioner is often much more expensive.

Making an Appointment

We operate on an appointment basis.  If you would like to make an appointment for an assessment you should email or telephone us. The initial assessment is always free. At that assessment we will listen to you describing what the problem is and then tell you whether we think counselling can help. If we think you need a different type of help, we will direct you to the best source of help for you.

Sessions

Sessions last 50 minutes and take place at a fixed time on a weekly basis.

Confidentiality and Ethical Standards

Counselling is confidential. We will not give your name or any information about you to anyone else unless someone's personal safety is at risk. We explain this to clients at their first appointment. Each of our counsellors has their own clinical supervisor and holds membership of a counselling organisation and adheres to the ethical framework of their counselling body.
