Stress

Stress

Stress in itself is not necessarily harmful but too much can be damaging. We need to be able to recognise when stress is becoming unmanageable and have ways that we can deal with it.

Stress can be a positive and valuable source of motivation. However too much stress can leaves us feeling overwhelmed. It can adversely affect our health. Stress caused by work is the second biggest occupational health problem in the UK (after back problems). Because there's still a stigma attached to mental health problems, people are often reluctant to seek help at work in case they are seen as unable to cope.

You can learn:

  • The difference between stress and pressure
  • What may be the causes of stress in your life
  • How to recognise signs of stress in your body
  • How to recognise signs of stress in your mind
  • How stress can affect your health and wellbeing
  • The need for relaxation and life balance

You will learn some very practical skills including:

  • How to measure your own stress level
  • Using distraction to calm your thinking
  • Avoiding problem thinking patterns
  • Simple breathing techniques to relieve stress

Familyworks periodically offers its stress course and also deals with stress issues for individuals in a counselling context.
